Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) sits on the artificial island of Chek Lap Kok, in the west of the territory, next to Lantau Island. It is the hub of Cathay Pacific, HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines, and one of the world’s major international airports: about 49.9 million international passengers used it in 2024. It operates 24 hours a day and has three runways, the third in operation since 2022.
Terminal 1 is the main building. Terminal 2, expanded and rebuilt, reopened its departures on 27 May 2026, and 15 airlines, mostly short- and medium-haul, moved there up to mid-June: Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay Airlines, HK Express, AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, IndiGo, VietJet, Bangkok Airways and Jeju Air, among others. Cathay Pacific and several long-haul airlines remain in T1. Arrivals at T2 are expected within 2027.
An underground automated people mover (APM) connects the two terminals. If your airline is in T2, check-in, security and immigration take place there, but depending on your flight you may board from the other terminal, so read your boarding pass carefully. The Midfield Concourse, with 20 aircraft stands, adds boarding capacity.
Cathay Pacific, the flag carrier, has the widest network, and HK Express, its low-cost subsidiary, focuses on Asia. There are connections across East and Southeast Asia, and airlines from other continents complete the long-haul offer.
The airport has SkyCity, a complex with a hotel and leisure facilities. Some airlines, such as Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Qantas, offer check-in at the Airport Express stations in the city, useful for spending the rest of the day without luggage. Check your airline’s conditions.
As the terminal changes are recent, check on your ticket or the official website which terminal your flight leaves from before heading to the airport. Because the airport is open 24 hours, there are late-night and early-morning flights, which is worth bearing in mind when planning your transfer.
The Airport Express train runs from the airport to Hong Kong and Kowloon stations in the city centre in about 24 minutes.
Frequent bus services connect the airport to across the city; night buses are available for late arrivals.
Taxis wait outside both terminals; red-roof taxis (Hong Kong Island) and green-roof taxis (Kowloon) serve different routes.
Terminal 1 handles most international flights and some domestic flights, connected to Terminal 2 by the Automated People Mover train.
Terminal 2 is a smaller modern terminal that opened in 2024, handling regional and some international flights.
