Antakya, the ancient Antioch on the Orontes, is the capital of Hatay province, a city where Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities lived side by side for centuries. It was severely hit by the February 2023 earthquakes, which damaged much of its historic centre; rebuilding is still under way.
