Airport · Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan
9 km from central Mazar-i-Sharif. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport, officially Mawlana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi, lies about 9 km east of the city, roughly 15 minutes by car, in northern Afghanistan. It is one of the country’s main airports and the most important in the north, towards the Uzbek border.
There are two buildings. The international terminal, opened in 2013 with funding from Germany and the United Arab Emirates, can handle about 1,000 passengers. The old terminal is now used only for domestic flights. The runway, about 3,000 m long, is among the longest in the country.
Ariana Afghan Airlines and Kam Air operate here, with flights to Kabul, Mashhad and Istanbul, along with the Iranian carriers Mahan Air and Meraj Airlines, flying to Tehran. Ariana adds seasonal flights to Jeddah. The schedule changes often, so check it with your airline.
Facilities are basic. Do not expect lounges or a large shopping area; bring cash and whatever you need for the wait.
Many governments advise against travel to Afghanistan, so check your own government’s advice and visa requirements before booking. Arrive early for the checks, and make sure whether your flight leaves from the international or the domestic terminal.
Taxis or pre-arranged transport wait outside the terminal; agree the fare before getting in, as most are not metered.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building. It handles domestic flights, with a limited number of international routes.
