Kabul International Airport KBL

Kabul International Airport is Afghanistan’s main air gateway. It lies in the north of the capital, a short distance from the centre, and is linked to the city by a four-lane highway. It sits at about 1,790 m above sea level, surrounded by the Hindu Kush mountains, and has the widest range of international connections in the country.

Terminals

There are two buildings: the international terminal, opened in 2008 with Japanese aid, and the old domestic terminal, a Soviet-era building from 1960. They share the same site, but check with your airline which one your flight uses.

Airlines and destinations

The Afghan carriers Ariana Afghan Airlines and Kam Air operate here, along with foreign airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Etihad and several Iranian carriers. Regular international destinations include Dubai, Istanbul, Tehran, Doha and Delhi, plus flights to other Afghan cities. The schedule changes often, so always verify your route.

Services

Facilities are basic. Do not expect the range of shops, lounges and dining of a large airport: bring cash and whatever you need for the wait.

Tips

Since 2021 the situation in the country has been delicate, and many governments advise against travel to Afghanistan; check your own government’s advice and visa requirements before booking. Arrive very early, as security and document checks can take a long time. If you can, arrange your transport to the hotel in advance.
