Valencia in 7 days: day-by-day itinerary

7-day itinerary for Valencia: old town, City of Arts and Sciences, El Carmen, beach, Albufera, Ruzafa and a day trip to Sagunto.

This 7-day itinerary is designed for anyone visiting Valencia for the first time who wants to go deeper at an unhurried pace. The first days cover the old town, the City of Arts and Sciences and El Carmen; the fourth is a beach day; the fifth is for the Albufera; the sixth, for Ruzafa and ceramics; and the seventh is a day trip to Sagunto.

From Manises airport you have three options. Metrovalencia lines L3 and L5 connect the airport with the centre, with a train roughly every 15 minutes on weekdays and about every 20 at weekends. There is also a metropolitan bus to the centre with stops in Manises, Quart de Poblet and Mislata, where you buy the ticket on board. And taxis leave from the rank at the terminal exit; the centre is about 8 km away.

Tips

  • Valencia is very flat and full of cycle lanes: hiring a bike is a comfortable way to get around, especially along the Turia Gardens and all the way to the beach.
  • Book the Oceanogràfic, the Lonja and guided visits in advance in high season.
  • Traditional paella is eaten at midday, and the authentic one contains chicken, rabbit and vegetables. Beware of those advertised as “seafood” at ridiculous prices in the most touristy areas.
  • Try horchata with fartons, a Valencian classic, at a horchatería in the centre or in Alboraya.
  • In summer the heat is fierce at midday: leave long walks for the morning and afternoon, and bring water, a cap and sun protection.
  • For the Albufera, plan the boat trip towards sunset: the light is beautiful and it cools things down.
  • For Sagunto, climb up to the castle early and bring water.

Frequently asked questions

Are seven days too many for Valencia?

No, if you want to take it easy: the city is small but has many neighbourhoods, and with a week you can combine the old town with the beach, the Albufera and day trips.

What does the Albufera day include?

A boat ride on the lagoon, a paella lunch in El Palmar and a walk through the dunes of Devesa del Saler. You get there by bus from the centre.

How should I split beach and city over a week?

Keep the beach for a full sunny day and, if the weather changes, swap it with a museum day such as the Museo Nacional de Cerámica and Ruzafa.

Do I need a car for the trip to Sagunto?

No, the Cercanías train reaches Sagunto. From the station you have to walk or take a bus up to the castle.
