Osaka Itami International Airport (ITM) is about 11 km north of Osaka Station, on land shared between Itami (Hyōgo Prefecture), Ikeda and Toyonaka (Osaka Prefecture). It is the city’s domestic airport: despite its name, it has no international flights, which use Kansai Airport, around 43 km away. About 15 million passengers used Itami in 2024.
There is a single terminal, fully renovated by 2020 and split into two zones. The North zone is used by JAL and Amakusa Airlines, and the South zone by ANA and Ibex Airlines. Between the two sits a central block with shops and restaurants, so moving from one zone to the other is a matter of a few minutes’ walk inside the same building.
JAL, ANA (with ANA Wings) and Ibex Airlines operate here, with flights to Japan’s main cities. By far the busiest route is Tokyo Haneda, followed by Naha (Okinawa), Sendai and Sapporo.
Shops and restaurants are concentrated in the central block between the North and South zones, so you will find them on your way through. This is an airport designed for short trips within Japan, with the convenience of being very close to the city.
Itami has noise restrictions: it allows only 18 landings per hour and 370 per day, and does not operate between 21:00 and 07:00. Do not expect late-night flights, and if your flight is delayed, keep that cut-off in mind.
If you are arriving from outside Japan, you will normally land at Kansai and then travel on to Osaka, or connect to a domestic flight to Itami, so allow plenty of time for the transfer between the two airports. Kobe, about 26 km away, is the other option for domestic flights near Osaka.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Osaka, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, and a handful of shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights connecting the area with Tokyo and other major cities.
