About the airport
Memanbetsu Airport is the airport of the Okhotsk region in eastern Hokkaido. It is in the locality of Memanbetsu, in the municipality of Ozora, about 20 km southwest of Abashiri and about 30 km northeast of Kitami, so it serves both cities. It opened in 1985 and has a 2,500 m runway, long enough for the jets arriving from Tokyo. It handled about 757,000 passengers in 2015. It is also the most convenient gateway to Shiretoko National Park and the lakes of eastern Hokkaido.

Airlines and destinations
The main connections are with Tokyo Haneda, served by JAL, ANA and Air Do, and with Sapporo. For the rest of Japan you connect at one of those two airports.

This is a small airport with basic services. Carry some cash in yen, and if you are heading to Shiretoko or rural areas, buy what you need in town.
Tips
Buses run from the airport to Abashiri and Kitami, and in season a seasonal bus goes to Utoro in Shiretoko, a journey of over two hours, so plan your arrival and departure times so as not to miss the last connection of the day. In winter snow can affect flights, and it is also the season of drift ice off the Abashiri coast.
