About the airport

Aomori Airport (AOJ) is about 11 km south-southwest of Aomori Station, at the northern tip of Honshu, and is the main airport of the prefecture. It has a 3,000 m runway and handled around 1.2 million passengers in 2024. It is used both by people visiting Aomori city itself and by those continuing to Hirosaki and its castle or to the rest of Tohoku, a region known for heavy winter snow and famous summer festivals.

Terminals

There is a single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building. It was renovated in 2019 to handle international travellers better, and includes a prayer space for Muslim travellers. You never need to change terminals or walk far.

Airlines and destinations

It is mainly a domestic airport. Japan Airlines flies to Tokyo-Haneda, ANA Wings and J-Air connect to Osaka-Itami and Sapporo-Chitose, and Fuji Dream Airlines links Aomori with Kobe and Nagoya. Internationally there are connections to Seoul with Korean Air and to Taipei with EVA Air. Routes change with the season, so check the schedule before booking.

Services

Inside the terminal there are shops and places to eat, with local products such as Aomori apples. Otherwise, services are those of a regional airport, without the range of a large one.

Tips

Winter is harsh: Aomori is one of the snowiest areas in Japan, and the airport has a large fleet of snow-clearing vehicles, but delays or diversions can still happen, so leave a margin if you have a connection. If you are continuing to Hirosaki, note that a toll road links the airport with both cities.
