About the airport
Monbetsu Airport, also called Okhotsk-Monbetsu, serves the city of Monbetsu on the Sea of Okhotsk coast in northern Hokkaido. It is about 7 km southeast of the centre, roughly 15 minutes away, and is run by the Hokkaido government. It opened in 1999 to replace an earlier airport and has a 2,000 m runway. It is very small: about 72,000 passengers in 2015.

Scheduled service is provided by ANA, with one daily round trip to Tokyo Haneda. There are no other direct connections, so for the rest of Japan you will need to connect at Haneda.

The terminal has a Japanese-style coffee shop, a gift shop and a free observation deck. Choice is limited, so do not expect more than the basics.
Tips
With a single daily flight, check the schedule in advance and book early in high season. The area’s big draw is the drift ice of the Sea of Okhotsk, which reaches the coast in winter and can be visited on the Garinko II icebreaker from Monbetsu. In winter, snow can affect flights, so leave some slack on connections.
