Airport · Kanazawa, Japan
30 km from central Kanazawa. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Komatsu Airport is the airport for Kanazawa and the wider Hokuriku region. It sits in the city of Komatsu, in Ishikawa Prefecture, about 4 km west-southwest of Komatsu Station and roughly 40 minutes by bus from Kanazawa. It shares its runway with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force base, so besides airliners you will see fighter jets taking off and landing.
There is a single passenger building, with one area for domestic flights and another for international ones. It is compact and easy to find your way around, and there is no need to change terminals.
The main route is Tokyo Haneda, served by Japan Airlines and ANA with many flights a day. There are also domestic flights to Sapporo, Fukuoka and other cities. Internationally, Korean Air flies to Seoul, EVA Air to Taipei and HK Express to Hong Kong, depending on the season.
Inside the terminal there are a few shops and restaurants. On the third floor there is an observation deck where you can watch both commercial and military aircraft take off and land. Carry some cash in yen just in case.
There is no train to the airport: the nearest station is Komatsu, about 15 minutes away, so if you arrive on the Hokuriku Shinkansen you will need to continue by bus or taxi. In September the air base holds an annual air festival, a good reason to visit if it coincides with your trip.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Kanazawa, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, and a handful of shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights connecting the area with Tokyo and other major cities.
