About the airport
Iwami Airport (IWJ), also called Hagi-Iwami, is in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture, about 5 km from the city. It opened in July 1993 and serves Masuda and the Hagi area, in neighbouring Yamaguchi Prefecture. About 130,000 passengers used it in 2015.
Terminals
There is a single small terminal, with arrivals and departures under the same roof. It is a quiet airport, with no distances to cover and no changing of buildings.
Airlines and destinations
The regular connection is the ANA service to Tokyo Haneda, with two round trips a day. At the end of summer, a daily round trip to Osaka Itami is added for roughly a month. It is a small offer, so check schedules and dates before planning your trip.
Services
Services are basic. Do not count on a wide choice of shops or restaurants inside the airport: places to eat and shop are in the town. Carry some cash in yen just in case.
Tips
With so few flights a day, book in advance and avoid tight connections. If you are heading to Hagi rather than Masuda, bear in mind that it is in another prefecture and the road transfer is longer; compare it with other ways of reaching the area before deciding.
