Airport · Matsuyama, Japan
6 km from central Matsuyama. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Matsuyama Airport is the main airport on the island of Shikoku and serves Ehime Prefecture. It lies about 5.6 km west-southwest of central Matsuyama, on the Seto Inland Sea coast. It handled about 3.2 million passengers in 2018, and is used by business travellers as well as visitors heading to Dogo Onsen, Matsuyama Castle or the rest of Shikoku. It has a 2,500-metre runway, extended in 1972 to allow jet flights, and began life in 1941 as an Imperial Japanese Navy airfield.
There is a single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, so you will not need to move between buildings on either domestic or international flights.
ANA, Japan Airlines, Jetstar Japan and Ibex Airlines operate here. Domestic flights link Matsuyama with Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Osaka (Itami), Nagoya, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Naha. International flights, suspended by the pandemic in 2020 and resumed in December 2022, connect to Seoul (Incheon), Busan and Taipei, with airlines such as Air Busan, Jeju Air and EVA Air.
The building has shops and restaurants. On the ground floor, in the arrivals area, there is an Orange Bar where you can pour yourself Ehime orange juice straight from a tap, using whatever variety is in season. It is a quirk of this airport and a nice last treat before flying.
If you are flying outside Japan, check which international routes operate on your date, because the network has changed since the pandemic. If Matsuyama is just your gateway to Shikoku, remember that the airport is only a few kilometres from the city and from Dogo Onsen, so you can make use of your arrival day.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Matsuyama, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, and a handful of shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights connecting the area with Tokyo and other major cities.
