Airport · Miyazaki, Japan
4 km from central Miyazaki. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Miyazaki Airport is about 3 km south-southeast of central Miyazaki, on the east coast of Kyushu island. In 2024 it handled around 3.1 million passengers. It opened in 1943 as an Imperial Japanese Navy base. Today it is the airport of Miyazaki Prefecture and a base of Solaseed Air, and the usual arrival point for visiting the Nichinan coast, Takachiho and southern Kyushu. It is known as “Miyazaki Blossom” because the building is decorated with flowers.
There is a single terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building. On the roof there is a free observation terrace from which to watch planes take off and land with the sea as a backdrop.
ANA, Japan Airlines and Solaseed Air operate here, along with the low-cost carriers Peach and Jetstar Japan. The main routes are Tokyo-Haneda, Osaka-Itami and Nagoya-Centrair, and there are also international flights to Seoul and Taipei. International routes change with the seasons.
The building is small and, besides the observation terrace, offers the basic services of a medium-sized airport. Carry some yen in cash just in case.
A train (the Miyazaki Kūkō Line of JR Kyushu) runs from the terminal to Miyazaki Station in about 10 minutes, so you hardly need to plan the transfer. In October 2024 a World War II bomb exploded under a taxiway and more than 80 flights were cancelled; it was an isolated case, but if you fly on a day of disruption, check your flight status before you leave. Typhoons in late summer and early autumn can also disrupt flights.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Miyazaki, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, and a handful of shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights connecting the area with Tokyo and other major cities.
