About the airport

Saga Airport, known since 2016 as Kyushu Saga International Airport (HSG), is in the Kawasoe area of Saga city, on reclaimed land at the edge of the Ariake Sea. It opened in July 1998 and is a regional airport with a 2,000-metre runway. About 630,000 passengers used it in 2015.

Terminals

There is a single terminal, with an international area that was expanded to handle low-cost carriers. As it is a small building, getting from check-in through security to the gate is quick.

Airlines and destinations

The main connection is the ANA flight to Tokyo Haneda. The “international” in the name reflects the airport’s focus on Asian low-cost carriers, with flights to South Korea and Taiwan and charters to China. The offer changes with the seasons, so check which routes operate on your dates.

Services

This is a small airport with limited shops and restaurants. It is wise to arrive with the basics sorted, and to carry some cash in yen just in case.

Tips

The airport is about 35 minutes by bus from JR Saga Station, and the bus is timed to flights, so do not count on service at any hour. Fukuoka Airport, much larger, also serves the region and is the alternative if you cannot find a flight: compare flights and transfer times before choosing.
