Airport · Niigata, Japan
8 km from central Niigata. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Niigata Airport is about 6.7 km northeast of Niigata Station, on the Sea of Japan coast. It is the airport of the prefectural capital and the Hokuriku-Shin’etsu region, and works as a regional airport with domestic flights and a few international routes. Almost one million passengers used it in 2015. Its great advantage is how close it is to the city: the centre is a short trip from the terminal.
There is a single terminal for domestic and international flights, so there are no transfers between terminals. The building is small and easy to get around.
The main domestic routes connect with Osaka, Sapporo, Fukuoka and Nagoya. Internationally there are flights to South Korea and Taiwan with airlines such as Korean Air and Tigerair Taiwan, although these routes have changed over the years; check which airlines operate on the dates of your trip. To reach Tokyo, the high-speed train (Shinkansen) leaves from the city’s station.
The terminal has shops and places to eat, with the offer typical of a regional airport. Do not expect lounges or a wide choice of restaurants. Carry some yen in cash just in case.
Niigata has very snowy winters, as is common on the Sea of Japan coast, and this can cause delays or cancellations at that time of year; check your flight status before heading to the airport. The airport has two runways, one of 2,500 m and one of 1,314 m. If you are continuing to Tokyo, compare the plane with the train: the Shinkansen is usually the most comfortable and reliable option.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Niigata, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, and a handful of shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights connecting the area with Tokyo and other major cities.
