About the airport

Yamagata Airport is in Higashine, about 23 km north of Yamagata city, and serves the whole prefecture. It is a small regional airport: it handled around 223,000 passengers in 2015, far below its peak in the early 1990s. The Yamagata Shinkansen bullet train, opened in 1992, took much of the Tokyo traffic, and today the airport is used mainly by travellers connecting to Osaka, Sapporo or Nagoya.

Terminals

A small two-storey terminal with two boarding gates and a rooftop observation deck, a pleasant spot to wait if you arrive early.

Airlines and destinations

Japan Airlines, J-Air and Fuji Dream Airlines operate here, with flights to Osaka, Sapporo, Nagoya and other Japanese cities; there are no international routes.

Tips

The airport is a fair distance from the city, so factor in the bus ride to Yamagata Station when planning your arrival. For Tokyo, the Shinkansen is usually the more practical choice. With only a few flights a day, confirm the timetable before you travel.
