Airport · Nagasaki, Japan
19 km from central Nagasaki. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Nagasaki Airport is on an artificial island in Omura Bay, off the city of Omura, rather than in Nagasaki itself. It was built on land reclaimed from the sea around the small island of Mishima and opened on 1 May 1975 as the first airport in the world built on the ocean. A 970-metre bridge, the Mishima Ohashi, links it to the mainland. In 2024 it handled about 3.07 million passengers. Its runway is 3,000 metres long.
There is a single passenger building, three floors high and with an observation deck, so there are no transfers between terminals. The airport is open from early morning until night.
ANA and Japan Airlines link Nagasaki with Tokyo (Haneda), Osaka and Nagoya, and the low-cost carriers Jetstar Japan and Peach complete the domestic offer. Oriental Air Bridge flies to islands within the prefecture, such as Fukue, Iki and Tsushima, and Korean Air operates the link to Seoul (Incheon).
The building has restaurants, cafes and shops, as well as assistance services for passengers with reduced mobility. The observation deck is a good place to wait for your flight and watch aircraft take off and land.
Because the airport is in Omura and not in the city of Nagasaki, allow for the road journey to the centre and do not leave it to the last minute if you have a flight to catch. There are also buses to other towns in the area, such as Isahaya, Sasebo and Shimabara, which makes the airport useful if your destination is outside Nagasaki.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Nagasaki, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, and a handful of shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights connecting the area with Tokyo and other major cities.
