About the airport

Kikai Airport is on Kikai island (Kikaijima), one of the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, in southern Japan. It is a small, remote airport and the island’s only air link: around 80,000 passengers used it in 2015. It has a 1,200 m runway, suited to small propeller aircraft. Before becoming a civilian airport it was an Imperial Japanese Navy airstrip, and it reopened for civilian use in 1968.

Terminals

There is a single small terminal, with arrivals and departures under the same roof. There are no transfers between terminals and no long walks: everything is a few steps away.

Airlines and destinations

The only airline with scheduled flights is Japan Air Commuter (JAC), which links the island with Amami Ōshima and Kagoshima. There are only a few flights a day, so any change of plans or delay can leave you with no alternative the same day. Book ahead and check the current timetable on the JAC website.

Services

Services are minimal. This is a small airport, so do not expect a wide choice of restaurants, shops or ATMs. Eat before you go to the airport and carry some yen in cash just in case.

Tips

Since the airport is small, you do not need to arrive very early, but do not leave it to the last minute: with few flights and small aircraft, missing one is costly. The area is exposed to typhoons in late summer and early autumn, which can cancel flights at short notice; if you have an important connection afterwards, leave a day’s margin. Before you go, arrange how you will get from the airport to your accommodation.
