Airport · Yakushima, Japan
14 km from central Yakushima. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Yakushima Airport is the only airport on the island of Yakushima, in Kagoshima Prefecture, and is run by the prefecture. It sits on the coast between the towns of Anbo and Miyanoura and is the quickest way to reach this island of ancient cedar forests, famous for its hiking trails. It handled about 165,000 passengers in 2015. The runway is 1,500 m, so only propeller aircraft can operate; an extension to 2,000 m, which would allow jets, has been approved.
A single small terminal with no jet bridges: you walk across the apron from the gate to the plane, and the apron has room for only a few aircraft at a time.
The only airline is Japan Air Commuter (a JAL subsidiary), with flights to Kagoshima, Fukuoka and Osaka Itami. For other cities you need to connect at one of those airports.
The terminal is small: there is a shop with Yakushima products and crafts, and you should not expect the choice of a large airport. Several car rental companies have offices nearby and pick customers up at the terminal.
If you plan to hike, book flights and a rental car well ahead: seats are limited and the island fills up in high season. The weather on the island is changeable and rain is common, so leave some slack if you have a same-day connection. You can also reach the island by boat from Kagoshima, an alternative if you cannot find a flight.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Yakushima, timed around flights.
A single, small terminal building, with arrivals and departures under the same roof. It is a small regional airport with limited scheduled flights.
