Miyakejima Airport MYE

Miyakejima Airport serves Miyake Island, a volcanic island in the Izu archipelago, part of the Tokyo Metropolis, about 180 km southeast of the capital. It is on the eastern side of the island, has a single 1,200-metre runway and is very small: around 22,000 passengers used it in 2015. Scheduled flights were suspended after the eruption of Mount Oyama in July 2000, which forced the evacuation of the island, and resumed in 2008.

There is a single small terminal, with arrivals and departures under the same roof.

Airlines and destinations

The main link is with Chofu Airfield in Tokyo, on small aircraft operated by New Central Airservice: a short flight that is the fast alternative to the overnight ferry from Tokyo. Toho Air Service connects the island with nearby islands such as Mikurajima and Oshima.

Services

The airport offers Wi-Fi. It is a small terminal built for a few flights a day: do not expect the shops and restaurants of a large airport, and bring what you need with you.

Tips

With small aircraft, check the flight status before leaving for the airport and allow extra time if you have an onward connection. Miyakejima attracts people looking for diving, birdwatching and volcanic scenery; flying one way and taking the ferry the other is a practical way to plan your stay.
