Airport · Wakkanai, Japan
10 km from central Wakkanai. Live flights, getting to town, car rental and where to stay.
Wakkanai Airport (WKJ) is about 10 km southeast of the city of Wakkanai, at the northern tip of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost city. It is a small regional airport, with around 186,000 passengers in fiscal year 2024, and the quickest way to get here from Tokyo or Sapporo. It is used mainly by travellers heading to Wakkanai and the Cape Soya area, or continuing by ferry to the islands of Rishiri and Rebun.
There is a single terminal, opened in 1998. Airlines check in on the ground floor, while the shops and the restaurant are on the first floor above. There is one boarding bridge, and the upper floors have a free observation deck.
Only ANA operates here, with flights to Sapporo (New Chitose) and Tokyo (Haneda). There are no international flights and no direct air link to Rishiri and Rebun: to reach the islands, take the ferry from the city.
Facilities are those of a small terminal: shops, a restaurant and the observation deck. Don’t expect lounges or a wide choice of shopping; if you need something specific, buy it in the city before you arrive.
Winters are harsh here: snow and wind can cause delays, cancellations or diversions, usually to Asahikawa. If you have an important connection, don’t leave your flight to Wakkanai to the last minute and allow plenty of margin. In summer there is an extra flight to Tokyo, so it is the best time to find convenient schedules. Always check the timetable before you travel, as there are only a few flights a day.
Taxis wait outside the terminal, or can be booked in advance; agree the fare before getting in.
A shuttle or limousine bus connects the airport with the centre of Wakkanai, timed around flights.
A single, small terminal building, with arrivals and departures under the same roof. It is a small regional airport with limited scheduled flights.
