Mashhad International Airport MHD

Mashhad International Airport (Shahid Hasheminejad, MHD) is Iran’s second-busiest airport, after Tehran-Mehrabad. It serves Mashhad, capital of Razavi Khorasan province in the north-east of the country, and its traffic depends largely on pilgrims visiting the shrine of Imam Reza. In 2016 it passed 10 million passengers for the first time, and in 2017 it reached about 10.5 million.

Terminals

It separates domestic flights (Terminal 1) from international ones (Terminal 2), so check which terminal your flight uses before you arrive.

Airlines and destinations

It is a base for many Iranian airlines, including ATA Airlines, AVA Airlines, Caspian Airlines, Iran Airtour, Iran Aseman, Kish Air, Meraj, Sepehran, Taban Air, Varesh and Zagros Airlines. It has scheduled flights to around 30 Iranian cities, with Tehran as the main route, and international connections to Central Asia, the Middle East, East Asia and Europe. International routes change from one season to the next.

Tips

As a pilgrimage destination, expect more crowds on religious holidays and in holiday periods, with full flights and longer queues. Book in advance and arrive with extra time, especially on an international flight. Confirm the schedule with the airline before heading to the airport.
