About the airport

Mehrabad (THR) is Tehran’s oldest airport and sits inside the city itself, in the west, near the Azadi Tower. Since 2008 it has handled domestic flights only, as international services moved to Imam Khomeini Airport. It is still Iran’s busiest airport by passengers and movements: between March 2022 and March 2023 it received around 12.3 million passengers.

Terminals

Airlines are split between several terminals from different eras (T1 dates from 1955, T2 from 1977, and T4, with T6 as its arrivals hall, from 2007 and 2012). Each airline works from its own, so check your ticket for the right terminal before you leave.

Airlines and destinations

It is the hub of Iranian domestic aviation: more than twenty airlines, led by Iran Air and including Mahan Air, Iran Aseman, Caspian Airlines and Qeshm Air, connect Tehran with around forty cities in the country. There are no regular international flights.

Tips

Do not confuse it with Imam Khomeini Airport (IKA): if you fly to or from abroad you will use that one, which is far from Mehrabad, so leave plenty of time for any connection between the two. As an urban airport, Tehran traffic can add hours to the trip at peak times. Foreign bank cards generally do not work in Iran, so carry cash.
