About the airport

Agartala Airport, named after Maharaja Bir Bikram, is about 12 km northwest of the city, the capital of Tripura state in northeast India. It was built in 1942 and served the Allied forces in the Second World War. Today it is the second busiest airport in northeast India, after Guwahati. Tripura is almost surrounded by Bangladesh and overland connections to the rest of India are long, so flying is the most practical way in.

Terminals

There is a single integrated terminal, opened in January 2022, with check-in counters, boarding bridges and modern baggage systems. Arrivals and departures share the building, so you won’t have to change terminals.

Airlines and destinations

IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air operate here, with domestic flights to Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Guwahati and other cities. For now, an international link to Chittagong in Bangladesh is only a plan.

Tips

If you are flying to Kolkata or Delhi, book ahead in busy seasons such as the October festivals. This is a civil airport in a border region: keep your ID and boarding pass at hand for the security checks, and allow a good margin.
