Silchar Airport IXS

Silchar Airport is in Kumbhirgram, about 29 km from the centre of Silchar in southern Assam, at the foot of the Barail Range. It serves the Barak Valley and is the fourth-busiest airport in north-east India, after Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal, with more than 412,000 passengers in the 2023-24 fiscal year. It was built in 1944 by the Royal Air Force as a military base; today it belongs to the Indian Air Force and works as a civil enclave together with the Airports Authority of India.

Terminals

There is a single, small domestic terminal with capacity for about 300 passengers. The runway can take aircraft the size of a Boeing 737 or an Airbus A320.

Airlines and destinations

IndiGo flies to Guwahati, Kolkata, Agartala and Aizawl, and Alliance Air flies to Kolkata, Imphal and Aizawl. It is a good link to the capital of Mizoram and other north-eastern cities, where roads are slow.

Tips

The airport is far from the city, about 29 km, so allow plenty of road transfer time before your flight and plan your onward transport, especially if you land late. As a regional airport, facilities are simple: don’t count on a wide range of services.
