About the airport
Prayagraj Airport (formerly Allahabad) is in the Bamrauli district on the edge of the city, in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of India’s oldest airports: it opened in 1931 and once had flights to London. Today it handles only domestic flights. In the 2024-25 fiscal year it passed one million passengers for the first time, boosted by the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, the great pilgrimage that gathers millions of people every twelve years at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
Terminals
There is a single terminal. A new building opened in January 2025, built to absorb the Kumbh crowds. Arrivals and departures share the building. The runway has an ILS system that allows night operations and landings in low visibility.
Airlines and destinations
IndiGo, Alliance Air and Akasa Air operate here, with flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar and Raipur, among others.
Tips
During the Kumbh and on sacred bathing days fares rise and airports fill up, so book far ahead and allow a margin. Outside those dates it is a quiet airport.
