Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) is in Borjhar, about 25 km from Guwahati, in Assam. It is the main airport of Northeast India and the big gateway and connecting point for the whole region: many travellers pass through here on their way to the other northeastern states. It is run by the Adani Group under a 50-year concession and handled around 7 million passengers in 2025.
A new integrated terminal opened in December 2025, with about 140,000 m² and capacity for around 13 million passengers a year, a design inspired by Assam’s nature and featuring bamboo elements. It is now the only passenger terminal: the old one, in service since 1958, is being converted into a cargo hub. Domestic and international departures and arrivals share the same building, so there are no transfers between terminals. The 3,110 m runway handles wide-body aircraft and has a CAT-III landing system for low-visibility operations.
IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air operate a wide domestic network including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and other cities, plus links to the rest of the Northeast. There are international flights to Bangkok, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, with airlines such as Thai AirAsia and Bhutan’s Drukair.
The new terminal has shops, cafés and restaurants, along with the usual services of an international airport. The exact offer changes as openings are completed, so check the official website for what is available.
The city is about 25-30 km away, so allow for the road transfer, which depends heavily on traffic. Delays can occur in the monsoon season and in winter fog. For international flights, arrive earlier; bring your e-ticket and a photo ID to enter the terminal.
Prepaid taxi counters are often available inside the terminal, or ride-hailing apps can be used outside; agree the fare in advance if not metered.
A shuttle or public bus connects the airport with the centre of Guwahati, timed around flights.
A single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures in the same building, with shops and places to eat. It handles mainly domestic flights, with some international routes.
