About the airport
Shillong Airport is in Umroi, about 30 km from the centre of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. It is a small regional airport built in the mid-1960s and operational by the mid-1970s. It was upgraded in 2017 with an instrument landing system and a longer runway, and in 2019 it received its Category 3C licence, which allows turboprops such as the ATR 72 and Q400. Traffic is low: around 97,000 passengers between April 2025 and March 2026, 19% fewer than the year before.
Terminals
A single terminal, opened in June 2011, with arrivals and departures in the same building. The runway is 1,829 m long, and the terrain makes extending it difficult: a lengthening to about 2,400 m has been proposed, but it would cost around 500 crore rupees.
Airlines and destinations
Three airlines operate at Shillong today. IndiGo flies to Dibrugarh, Imphal and Kolkata. Alliance Air connects to Aizawl, Dimapur, Guwahati, Lilabari and Tezpur. SpiceJet flies to Delhi. Most links are regional services within northeast India.
