Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is in Shamshabad, about 24 km south of Hyderabad, in Telangana. It opened in March 2008, replacing the old Begumpet airport. It is operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL), a public-private company. It is one of India’s major airports: between April 2024 and March 2025 it handled about 30.5 million passengers, the country’s fourth-busiest.
There is a single integrated terminal for domestic and international flights, so you will not need to change buildings on a connection. It has two parallel runways, one of about 4,260 m that can take the A380.
It is a base for IndiGo, as well as SpiceJet, Alliance Air and Star Air, and for cargo operators such as Blue Dart Aviation and Amazon Air. It offers a wide network of domestic destinations and international flights.
According to its official website, there are restaurants, cafés and bars, shops, ATMs from national and international banks, baggage storage, Wi-Fi, a transit hotel and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. Holders of Indian and OCI passports can use Fast Track immigration. A Novotel hotel stands within the airport grounds.
From April 2026, paper disembarkation cards are no longer handed out on arrival in India: fill in the digital e-Arrival card beforehand. With 24 km to the centre, allow for Hyderabad traffic when deciding when to leave.
A metro line connects the airport with the city centre.
Airport buses (Pushpak) run to various parts of Hyderabad.
Prepaid taxis and ride-hailing apps wait outside the terminal.
