About the airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) is in the Santacruz and Sahar districts of Vile Parle East, inside Mumbai itself. It is India’s second-busiest airport after Delhi: in fiscal year 2024-25 it exceeded 55 million passengers, above its maximum capacity of 50 million. It has two intersecting runways, suitable for the Airbus A380. Since December 2025 the city also has Navi Mumbai Airport.

Terminals

There are two terminals, separate on the landside, about a 15-20 minute drive apart, though they share the same airside. Terminal 1 (Santacruz) is for domestic flights only, mainly low-cost airlines. Terminal 2 (Sahar) handles international flights and many domestic ones too; it is a huge X-shaped terminal with an art collection. A free shuttle runs between them, but airlines change terminals over time: always check which one is on your ticket.

Airlines and destinations

Air India is the main airline, together with Alliance Air, and the airport is also a cargo base for Blue Dart and FedEx. IndiGo, Akasa Air, SpiceJet and Star Air complete a very dense domestic network. International flights connect with Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America.

Services

Terminal 2 has most of the offer: shops, restaurants, displayed art and the usual services of a large international airport. Terminal 1 is simpler.

Tips

Mumbai traffic can be very slow, especially at peak times and during the monsoon, so leave with plenty of margin. For international flights arrive about three hours ahead, and for domestic ones about two. If you change terminals for a connection, allow plenty of extra time.
