Navi Mumbai International Airport NMI

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is the second airport of the Mumbai region, alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (BOM). It is in Ulwe, in Navi Mumbai, about 35 km from Mumbai’s existing airport and around 37 km from South Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on 8 October 2025, and commercial flights began on 25 December 2025. It is a very new airport, and not a small one: its first phase is designed for 20 million passengers a year and the full plan aims for 90 million.

Terminals

There is a single passenger terminal, with a lotus-shaped roof, and a 3,700 m runway. As it is a single building, there are no transfers between terminals. Further phases are still being added, so some of the infrastructure is still under construction.

Airlines and destinations

On the first day of operations, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express and Star Air flew, and the first flight was IndiGo’s from Bengaluru. Service started mainly with domestic flights between India’s big cities, with selected international routes planned, and it will keep growing, so check which airlines and routes operate on your date. A domestic cargo terminal has also opened.

Services

As the facility is new, the range of shops and restaurants will be filled in over the first months. Before you travel, check the airport website or your airline to see which services are open.

Tips

The distance to Mumbai is considerable: keep it in mind, as traffic can be heavy and connections to the centre are still developing (metro and suburban rail are planned). If your ticket says NMI and not BOM, do not go to the wrong airport: they are two different ones. Arrive with a good margin, especially in an airline’s first weeks of operation.
