Gondia Airport GDB

Gondia Airport (VAGD) is at Zilmili in Maharashtra, about 17 km northeast of Gondia city. The British built it in 1940 as a Royal Indian Air Force base, and since 2005 it has been run by the Airports Authority of India. It is a very small regional airport with limited commercial traffic.

Terminals

There is a single terminal. The runway is long, around 3,200 m, and has an instrument landing system (ILS) for night operations.

Airlines and destinations

Commercial service is sparse and changes often. In recent years regional carriers such as IndiGo (to Hyderabad) and Star Air (to Indore, connecting to Mumbai) have flown here, but routes are suspended and resumed, so check that your flight exists before planning the trip.

Services

Facilities are basic. Hotels, restaurants and shops are in the city, not at the airport, so bring some cash and eat before you leave.

Tips

A large part of the airport’s activity is pilot training: CAE Global Academy Gondia, a joint venture between the AAI and Canada’s CAE, is based here, so do not be surprised to see training aircraft. The airport is quite far from the city, so book your transfer ahead, especially if your flight arrives late in the day.
