About the airport
Jay Prakash Narayan Airport serves Patna, the capital of Bihar, and is the state’s main air gateway. It is used almost entirely for domestic flights and handles more than 4 million passengers a year (about 4.4 million between April 2025 and March 2026, up 14.8% on the previous year). It has a single runway of about 2,070 metres, which limits aircraft size because the railway line prevents it from being extended.
Terminals
There is one passenger terminal, a new building that was inaugurated in May 2025 and entered service in June 2025. It has two levels, with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the first floor, five aerobridges and a capacity of around 10 million passengers a year. As it is a single building, there are no transfers between terminals.
Airlines and destinations
IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Alliance Air operate here, with flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and other Indian cities. It is the reference airport for reaching Bihar: from here you can also head to Nalanda and Rajgir, although by road.
Services
The new terminal includes food outlets and shops, as well as airline counters. The airport also has a domestic cargo terminal, which does not affect passengers.
Tips
The airport is growing fast and the terminal is newly opened, so check your airline’s website for when check-in opens. Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights; road access within Patna can be slow at peak times, so allow extra time for the journey.
