Birsa Munda Airport IXR

Birsa Munda Airport is in Hinoo, about 5 km from the centre of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand in eastern India. It is the state’s main airport and one of the busiest in the country: about 2.7 million passengers used it in the 2025-26 fiscal year, around 5% more than the year before. It is run by the Airports Authority of India.

Terminals

It has a single integrated terminal, opened in 2013, with four aerobridges and capacity for domestic and international passengers. The runway is about 2,748 m long and has an instrument landing system. There is also a separate cargo terminal, opened in 2017. There are plans to extend the runway and the facilities for international operations.

Airlines and destinations

Mainly IndiGo and Air India Express operate here, with domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Pune.

Tips

It is very close to the city, so the transfer is short, but urban traffic can lengthen it at peak times: leave with time to spare. The airport is used mostly for domestic travel; if you are connecting to an international flight, this is usually done in Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata.
