About the airport
Madurai Airport lies about 12 km south of the centre of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, southern India. It is the airport for the city of the Meenakshi temple and serves much of the south of the state. About 1.39 million passengers used it in the 2025-26 fiscal year. In March 2026 the Indian government approved designating it officially as an international airport.
Terminals
The passenger building is an integrated terminal opened in 2010, for domestic and international flights, with immigration counters. Next to it, the old terminal was converted into a cargo terminal, so it is not an area for travellers. There is a single runway of about 2,285 m with an instrument landing system.
Airlines and destinations
IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express and SpiceJet operate here. There are domestic flights to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Navi Mumbai, and international routes to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, plus Colombo with SriLankan Airlines.
Tips
Chennai has the most connections, which is handy if you are linking to long-haul flights. If you are leaving on an international flight, allow more time for immigration and security than on a domestic one.
