About the airport
Mangaluru Airport is near Bajpe, about 13 km northeast of the city centre, on the Karnataka coast. It opened in 1951 and is now the main air gateway to the Canara coast and the Udupi region, with strong links to the Persian Gulf, where many people from the area travel for work. Its best-known feature is its “tabletop” runways: they sit on a plateau with drops on the sides and require precise landings from pilots.

There is a single terminal, in operation since August 2010, for domestic and international flights. Arrivals and departures share the building, so there is no changing terminals.

The main airlines are Air India Express and IndiGo. They fly to India’s big cities and to Gulf destinations, such as the United Arab Emirates or Oman.
