About the airport
Bagdogra Airport is about 12 km southwest of Siliguri, in West Bengal, and is the main air gateway to North Bengal and the hill stations of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong, as well as Sikkim and its capital, Gangtok. It operates as a civil enclave inside an Indian Air Force base. In 2019-20 it handled about 3.2 million passengers, a high figure for an airport of its size.
Terminals
There is a single terminal for domestic and international flights. A new one is being built, due in 2027 and designed for far more passengers, so during works there may be changes to access and parking.
Airlines and destinations
IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air operate here, with flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and other cities. Abroad, Drukair connects to Paro in Bhutan, and there is a flight to Bangkok.
Tips
From the airport, Darjeeling and Gangtok are several hours away on mountain roads, so factor that in when planning your departure flight, and avoid the last flight of the day if you depend on the road. Because it shares its runway with military aviation, restrictions and delays can happen. Allow a good margin for the checks.
